Another great episode, Ashley! It's a few weeks past Halloween, but I'm still catching up on earlier Video Store episodes. I always enjoyed Disney's animated The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and try to watch it every year.
(There was a very enjoyable Made-for-TV movies version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow ffrom 1980 starring Jeff Goldblum as Ichabod Crane, Meg Foster as Katrina, and Dick Butkus of the Chicago Bears as Brom. It is my favorite adaptation of The Washington Irving story.)
I was on a Ray Bradbury kick this summer and read Dandelion Wine, Farewell Summer, and Something Wicked This Way Comes... his Green Town Trilogy. I watched Something Wicked after not having seen it since watching it on HBO in the 80s. It held up well!
I have yet to see The Black Cauldron. Despite being a fan of Disney's animated films, it's one that I never got around to watching. I'll let you know what i think of it.
I tried to rewatch The Watcher in the Woods this previous Saturday, but it is unavailable for streaming... even on Disney+. The 2017 remake is available on streaming services, but not the original.
I always enjoy the personal touches you add to your episodes! I look forward to your next Video Store Podcasts!
Thank you so much! I actually own a copy of the 2017 edition (sent the husband out to get a copy for me, but I did not specify which Watcher in the Woods!) and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's different from the 1980 film but still good. I'm curious to see how either film stacks up against the book, as I have no idea how good of an adaptation either might be. Would definitely recommend picking up a blu-ray copy of the 1980 film if you can so you can get the alternate endings and opening. It looks and sounds great too!
Really appreciate the thoughtful and thorough feedback here!
I just finished The Black Cauldron for the first time, and I enjoyed it very much! I thought the animation was spectacular, and oftentimes gorgeous. The story was exciting, at times tense, and quite moving. The Horned King and his minions were sufficiently frightening. Had I seen it as a young child, I think it would have scared me. I think I'll have to read the original Lloyd Alexander stories, even if the film differs significantly from the novels. Great recommendation, Ashley!
