I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Mel Gibson's historical films. While I enjoy watching them (Braveheart still holds my theater viewing record at 7 screenings - unlikely to ever be beaten since I don't watch movies in theaters anymore) I end up doing some reading and finding out he has a bit of a complete disconnect from reality. That said, I might never have read about 13th century Scotland had I not seen Braveheart, or done a little online reading about Francis 'The Swamp Fox' Marion had I not watched The Patriot.

I view historic films as a gateway to actually history. Like you said if it wasn't for the movies you wouldn't have read about the real people/events.
I think that's the best thing historical movies can do, drive an interest into the real history.
